What’s Included in Your Kit
- Serialized sample envelope: a coin envelope printed with a unique sample number. Your leaf sample goes inside.
- Matching plant tag: a plastic tag with the same serial number. It goes on the tree you sampled.
Results are reported by serial number, so matching each result to the right tree is easy, even across a whole orchard. Every order also includes an instruction sheet and a Farmer Freeman sticker.
How It Works
- Tag your tree: attach the serialized plastic tag to the tree you’re testing.
- Collect a sample: snip 1/2 to 1 inch of healthy leaf, ideally new growth, and place it in the envelope with the matching number. Dried leaves work as long as they’re still green.
- Send it to the lab: return your sample using the included instructions. Results are emailed within 3-5 business days of the lab receiving it.
How Young Can I Test?
If you can safely take a 1/2 inch leaf sample, your seedling is old enough to test.
No Rush on Returning Samples
Collection kits don’t expire or go bad. Send each sample back whenever you’re ready, and there’s no need to return multiple kits all at once.

Farmer Freeman’s fig sex test uses a qPCR-based protocol to identify Female and Male/Caprifig trees in Ficus carica, Ficus palmata, and Ficus johannis subsp. afghanistanica.
