Jackson here with the next one in our hunting series.

We’ve been asking breeders a simple thing: how do you actually hunt?

Not the theory. The real process:

How many seeds they pop, what they’re chasing, how they tell a keeper from a pretender. Same six questions, one breeder at a time.

This time: Terp Fountain Genetics. Everything comes back to one idea, profile transfer, and everything gets settled at the wash. Terp Fountain Genetics - PIEGASM PUNCH - Terpy Seeds Here’s how he hunts, in his own words.

1. How many seeds do you pop for a hunt?

“Anywhere from a single pack of something out of the vault to multiple, or a solid grip of, say, something I made.”

2. What are you hunting for?

“Profile transfer to wash, and vigor in growth.”

Profile transfer is the specific thing: not whether the plant smells good in the room, but whether that smell survives the wash and lands in the hash. Plenty of plants are loud on the vine and forgettable in a bag. He’s hunting the ones that carry over.

3. Hunting for hash — any advice?

“You can decide what growth traits you won’t tolerate in the grow. Other than that, selections happen where you are selecting for — the wash. Profile transfer is the name of the game.”

4. Regs vs. fems — why one or the other?

“Fems would be grown to make a flavor selection for a jar menu. Regs are hunted and grown for the same reason, with the added addition of expanding and creating new lines and a wider range of results.”

5. Hunting for breeding vs. production — how’s it different?

“Breeding, there’s going to be an emphasis on selecting from regular seed and stabilizing the growth and profile range of the seed you are breeding.”

6. General advice for anyone hunting?

“Smoke and then decide. It’s easy to know what you for sure don’t want based on, say, terrible growth traits in a pheno. But it’s harder to know what you want, especially when there’s a lot of contending phenos, and especially when you are exploring new lineages that you haven’t experienced before.”

Culling is easy. Choosing is hard. And when the field is deep or the lineage is unfamiliar to you, there is no shortcut around actually smoking it.

That’s Terp Fountain. More breeders coming. Same six questions, different answers. Reply and tell us who you want to hear from next.
